Sound Start WA offers consultancy services to educational institutions, parents, companies and organisations, primarily in Western Australia but also in other states/countries. It specialises in the design of appropriate learning experiences and programs for individuals with learning difficulties and the development of sound literacy and numeracy skills for all. Shirley Houston is an Educational Consultant with over 30 years of teaching experience. She has taught in government, Catholic and Independent schools, in a number of Australian states and overseas. She has lectured at several universities in WA and at TAFE. She earned her Masters degree in Special Education in 1983 and the Royal Society of Arts certificate for Teachers of Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties in 1996. Shirley has established a reputation as a caring, dynamic and innovative educator.
- take part in Case Conferences/meetings, providing a specific perspective
- observe and assess skills and needs in various environments
- develop instructional materials and teaching strategies in support of educational programs
- evaluate and advise on the use of instructional materials
- assist with educational program planning
- guide development and/or revision of curriculum and instructional practice
- visit educational institutions to assist with instructional or curriculum concerns, professional learning and/or other areas
- advise educators on initiation, evaluation and improvement processes
- provide face-to-face or virtual professional learning for educators and/or allied professionals
- run parent information and/or support sessions
